Jury Finds Andrea Yates Not Guilty of Murdering Her Children

This makes me sick…

From FNC:

A jury in Houston found Andrea Yates not guilty of murder by reason of insanity Wednesday in the drowning deaths of her of young children.

The 42-year-old will be committed to a state mental hospital, with periodic hearings before a judge to determine whether she should be released. If convicted of murder, she would have faced life in prison.

Defense attorneys never disputed that Yates killed her five children — 6-month-old Mary, 2-year-old Luke, 3-year-old Paul, 5-year-old John and 7-year-old Noah — by drowning them in a bathtub of their suburban Houston home in June 2001. They based their case, however, on a claim that she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis and, in a delusional state, believed Satan was inside her and was trying to save them from hell.

Another jury in 2002 had found Yates guilty of murder in the deaths of three of her children, but that verdict was overturned on appeal because of erroneous testimony. Prosecutors retried her on the same three counts of murder.

Since they say she was temporarily insane, then she is sane now, right? So how long will they actually keep her in this hospital?

Ya know, I don’t care why she did the crime, just that she did the crime. Once found sane, she should be sent to prison to pay for her crime. When your kids do something wrong do you care why they did it? I never let excuses get in the way of punishment, but we as a nation let people make excuses for committing a crime.

One of my old favorite shows growing up had a great theme song; don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.

  2. A jury of 12 of my peers made a difficult decision after listening to all the evidence; I respect that decision. I am further heartened by the fact that her former husband and the father of the children is fully supportive of that decision.

  3. This woman is a monster, mentally ill or not. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to die by drowing. A long time. Jail was to good for her. And I think her husband and extended family members should be held accountable as well for letting what ever was wrong with her go on. Idiots. :angry_ee:
